Dragons are the main bases of the Dragon Wars world, though humans and other races are allowed their roles in the story it is in the end the dragons that take the final say.
The traditional dragon of our world is what is known as the European Dragon (However in our world they are just dragons, as there is no Europe in our world). They have four legs and wings, they have tails and generally a body shaped like that of a cat. They have scales of various colors and a dragon may have different color scales than that of either parent. Some dragons share similar blood and so their clan may share similar scale colors. Dragon range widely in features much like humans do, having all sorts of differences from spines, to horns, to claws, to neck and tail length or eye color (and as stated before those of close blood may have similar features, however dragon blood is prone to quick evolution). Most of these dragons breath fire, some may breath lightning or acid or even something stranger.
All are highly magical creatures, and with training can develop these abilities further. They all have the ability to communicate with others of their kind but like the magic this does not always come naturally and may need to be trained. A dragon's telepathic and magical abilities are determined by the time put into practice or simply natural strength in an ability.
All are natural fliers. They are capable runners, moving much like a large hunting cat, and even very capable swimmers
Males and Females are equals in all respects, it just depends on the individual dragon (though Male or Female can sometime have effects on the type of magic the dragon wields. Males usually focus on more aggressive magic and females defensive. Usually)
Dragons mate out of love, and the female lays eggs (dependent on that dragon and that of her mate's blood this can be a single egg or a brood).
At hatching the hatchling is already quite capable of walking and learn to fly not long after. They are much more intelligent than that of human babies. They are considered adults (That is they are technically old enough to mate, though many will wait some time longer) at 50 years of age. A dragon if not killed by violence can live easily up to a thousand years and some even reach up to four thousand. They stop growing once they get to a certain age (usually when they reach anywhere between 500 and 800) but continue to grow mentally. Unlike most races a dragon does not grow weak as it ages and do not grow feeble minded.
Serpentine dragons (What is known as Oriental dragons to us, though as before such places do not exist in our world) are those with long snake like bodies (There are often serpent shaped dragons among the 'European' dragons, but they can be told apart because of always having wings and they have a reptilian face while the 'Oriental' dragons' faces are usually more like that of a canine), they have four legs and often no wings (they are all gifted with a natural magic that gives them flight). Their faces are usually adorned with whiskers.
They are not naturally born to this land, living across the sea. Sometimes one of their kind will travel across to visit the land that makes up the known DW world.
Serpentine dragons can breed with the traditional dragons (As dragons can breed with most races of the world) the result being a dragon that is a cross in appearance between the two. This is rare happening as Serpentine dragons rarely spend enough time in the DW lands to grow attached.
Serpentine dragons usually live a little longer than traditional dragons.
Aquatic Dragons live their whole lives in the water. They have both lungs and gills (like an amphibian) and so can survive both in and out of the water. They resemble their above water cousins but do not possess wings. Instead their back legs have developed into a set of large wing-like flippers. Their clawed front legs are often webbed, as is their tail with the spines running down their backs. They can move on land by slithering like a snake. Aquatic dragons usually have scales of blue and green matched with reds and yellows like the ocean and corral.
They live about as long as their land cousins, and tend to be even more developed in telepathy. They do not breath fire (or acid or lightning) but instead a blast of steam.
They age the same as their land based cousins.
Aquatic Dragons are an entirely different race than Sea Serpents.
Abyssal Dragons are those dragons that blood has been fused with that of demons and spend their days in the infernal realms. Gaulroach himself and many of his followers have been simply mutated by demonic energies while these dragons are true beings of the dark realms. They tend to have scales with patterns of deep red and black, and very fearsome arrays of horns and spikes. They traditionally breath fire but some burst molten lava from their jaws. All are destructive, many insane, and prone to different mutations.
They age the same as their mortal cousins, though it is known that they cannot die of age their lives are full of violence and most don't make it to the first thousand.
