Darkness fell across the island like a sweeping cloak.
The wind picked up, whistling through the sparse trees. Sitting against the backdrop of the starry sky on the jagged ridge jutting out from the side of the island, a single silhouette stared out at the moon.
Wings folded forlornly, a pair of gold eyes looked unerringly outwards.
For the first time since leaving the forest, Venus asked herself a question.
'What am I going to do?'
Dragons weren't loners by nature. Well, her family weren't anyway. And now, Leander had just upped and gone.
Where, she had no idea.
But now, with the departure of one of her oldest friends, she was confronted by the ugly truth.
'I'm a danger.'
This...Rafael, this menance, this enemy had set his sights firmly on hurting her. And what better way to target her friends?
Doubt started to worm its way through her resolve.
'I said I would fight, but is it the best course of action? I've seen this before - whenever Isandre takes control, it's always the same. Over and over... my life is mirroring her first. So what am I supposed to do? Follow in her footsteps or take a different path?'
~You make your own life Venus.~
Isandre cut across her confusion, but the dragoness seemed not to hear her.
'It's like I'm losing control of my fate. Fight or flee? Stay, or keep my friends safe?'
Resting her head on the rock below her, Venus shut her eyes, and said aloud.
"I'll take my own way. Where she fought, I'll fight. But where she remained, I'll stay away. Even though they said they'd help me, I can't risk dragging them into a fight which doesn't belong to them. But I want them to know how grateful I am..."
~Venus. You can't just leave your friends because you've got someone tailing you! It's happened before! You're disillusioned! Just because Leander has gone off to parts unknown doesn't mean you can just stop!~
~Isandre, I'm not taking your path. I walk my own. Everyone has their own. Serrion and Gaulroach. Fury and Sheakria. And now me and Rafael. They have their own battles, and I will have mine. There is no need for them to be sucked into it.~
~If I have to, I'll take control of our body and fly you back to the forest.~
The threat had no effect on her at all. She didn't hear it.
~Venus? Venus? Venus!~
Isandre shut her eyes. Why couldn't her host hear her?
The link between them sparked, and cut out to the lightest shade of pale.
Decided, whether on the wrong path or the right, Venus spread her wings, and disappeared into the darkness.
