Darkness enveloped the forest, bathing all in a pale bit of moonlight. A single point in the forest was the brightest, it was the center of it. A unicorn drank from the ebony waters of the river. When it lifted its head the water dribbled down from its mouth. Something made a cracking noise deep in the forest. This sent the unicorn fleeing...something was coming, somthing...dangerous.
As the unicorn ran, it heard the cracking of twigs on the forest floor and the sound of leaves crunching close behind it. The ground seemed to tremble as the beast that chased the unicorn slowly came even closer. The unicorn didn't dare look back. Soon, it could almost feel the warm breath of the creature that followed. The unicorn moved as fast as its legs could carry it, but that wasn't fast enough. A low growl was heard behind it, followed by... complete silence. The unicorn looked back for a second, and slowed down to a stop, tired and breathing hard. It saw nothing. A terrifying, piercing screech came from above, startling the unicorn. It looked up and saw the silhouette of a large, winged beast. Its emerald eyes glowed in the darkness, and its scales reflected the moonlight, creating an eerie glow. It swiftly swooped downward, toward the unicorn.
It kept running, trying to get back to the one it loved. A unicorn named MoonSilver. One that would banish the fears and melt away the pain. But the creature came closer, ever closer. The unicorn skidded to a halt, it was trapped....the forest had stopped abbruptly as the unicorn realized it was trapped. The creature came out of the shadows and it was realised that it was the dragon Maur that lived in this area. And now the unicorn was pinned, trapped, doomed.
The dragon landed near the unicorn, folding his leathery wings neatly against his back. Maur growled, baring his fangs, as he slowly stepped closer. Bright moonlight shone down on his pure white scales, giving him a ghostly appearance. Maur snapped at the unicorn, but she whirled around and kicked out, hard, with her hind legs, causing him to jump back to avoid the blow. Seeing this as a chance to escape, the unicorn slipped by on the left, and dashed away, the now furious dragon flying after her.
The unicorn ran as fast its her cloven hoofs would allow...racing closer towards the goal. A safe haven for the creatures of Lore that were peaceful. She was inches away, almost there when the unicorn was swept up in the dragon's talons. It bugled and kicked to get free, but the dragon wouldn't allow this. Sudenly out burst another unicorn, the one who was the love. Moonsilver.
Moonsilver, a male, lashed out with a horn as hard as pearl and attacked Maur. It was enough to free the unicorn.
"Get out of here now Moonsilver!" the unicorn begged.
"I've freed you. I can't leave yet Riverdancer." Moonsilver replied.
"Please! Maur will destroy me instead of you...go!"she begged.
A smirk played apon Moonsilver's muzzle.
"No...I will do that for Master Maur. You are of no importance River. None." Moonsilver said before attacking. She fought back and eventually Moonsilver lie dead on the ground. Maur roared in annoyance.
~You've foiled my plans Riverdancer. Let it be that you are cursed until one you love forgives you.~ Maur growled before flying off. This left the unicorn Riverdancer to cry pearly tears over the dead body of her beloved Moonsilver.
A little while later, Riverdancer finally calmed a bit and left Moonsilver. As upset as she was, she knew there was nothing she could do now. She slowly walked out of the area, only looking back once. As she walked through the quiet, seemingly peaceful forest, she couldn't stop thinking about Moonsilver, her true love, and she blamed herself for his death... She would do anything to get him back, though she knew it was impossible. After wandering aimlessly for hours, she suddenly realized how long she had been travelling. Birds were beginning to sing, signalling the coming of morning. The sky was starting to glow pink. Riverdancer came to a stream and stopped to get a drink...
The dawn cast its first beams on River and she glowed black. She tossed her head back in alarm as she...changed. After the light went away she looked into the water and snorted in surprise. The unicorn staring back at her was black, with a silver horn, red eyes, and silver hoofs. Much different than the silvery white unicorn with blue eyes, a golden horn, and golden hoofs she expected to see. So this was what Maur meant by a curse...
She snorted again, shocked, and stepped back away from the stream, not wanting to see that horrible reflection again. She couldn't believe what happened to her. She hopped over the stream and stopped on the other side. A few songbirds nearby sat on the branches of a bush, eating bright red berries. Riverdancer approached them, only to watch them screech in terror and fly away. A few feathers floated to the ground around River. Never before had an animal of the forest reacted this way in the presence of a unicorn... But because of the curse, Riverdancer was seen as a kind of monster. Her appearance made her seem pure evil. So dark that the bravest creature wouldn't even make eye contact. River resumed walking, occasionally stopping to watch the little animals flee from her...
She stumbled through the day, watching creatures run, eating, and sleeping. Soon it was nightfall again and RiverDancer was grateful that it would be too dark for most to see her. As the sun slipped away completely she snorted in surprise to see herself ungulfed in silver light. When it left she looked down at a hoof and saw herself as she once was. This would be the curse. By night a beauty, by day a monster.
