"He is alright though confused. He has been a spirit for what may be considered a long while now depending on what measure of time you may choose to use... but I guess it is best not to divulge oneself entirely. Poor fellow seems to miss his flesh as much as I do. I suppose it isn't strange for a spirit to want for the mortal plane they left. I do believe he enjoys his freedom but wants for the feel of snow. It is true we could transport ourselves to the far north but even then the frost cannot touch us, only pass through our forms."

"Ah." Tiamat nodded, understanding.
"I should have thought to do a reading on you two, but in between the fights and the lessons recently, I haven't had chance. Tell him that my favour to you extends to him as well - if ever he has want of a trip down memory lane. But-" At this, her expression set and became serious. "You must make sure that he is entirely certain of his status as his spirit. If they are called back too soon, then they tend to have too much of a connection, a want for life, if you like. Which spells trouble, both for the spirit and the shaman. Lesson number one, you see."
She dropped her solemnity like a hot coal, and settled back with her head on her front legs, stretching out comfortably in the grass.
"Maybe I should shove you two in the direction of your old friends... I'm sure Esme and Fenrill would be happy to see you."

"I'm sure they would," Tatsu nodded. "However I remind you I have seen them more recently than I have seen you. I'd bet Mica would not mind the direction though. He would enjoy seeing Fenrill and Esmeya again. Too bad about Rafael though... Even though Esme managed to pull him free from his imprisonment from his own mind and Kre's influence even I can tell his consciousness is fleeting. Is it possible for a spirit to be so weak they must pass on?"

"I didn't know if you would've bumped into them sooner than I did, but it makes sense that you did. As for Rafael..." Tiamat sighed, eyes moving across the horizon as she thought.
"I've mulled it over, and there are a few different spells that could be used to give him enough strength to exist, but the risk involved... well. It's high. Very high. And yes, it is possible for a spirit to be weak enough to just fade out of existence. No spirit means no soul, and no soul means no reincarnation. It's as if they never were."

Tatsu frowned. "Just how risky? And what does this process entail?" Esmeya, if she knew, would sacrifice even herself to save Rafael from such a fate. I have to admit I would as well if I felt I had to. Esme, Fen, Raf, and Mica... They're all so close together. I think they deserve the chance to all be together in eternity...

The plume of Tiamat's tail shifted as she swept it from side to side in the long grass.
"From what I've worked out, the spell would have to interfere with the ties of his soul - nothing deep enough to alter him, but just the threads that keep him connected to this plane and the spirit realm. Simply feeding him strength or magic or aura wouldn't be enough, because he's so insubstantial the flow of power would just erase him anyway, so it has to be done as close to the problem as you can get to minimise the potential damage. But the magic used to perform the spell on someone's soul can't be your average, everyday magic - this kind of magic has to come from the soul of the caster. So in effect, the caster or casters are stabilising his existence by using pieces of their own souls."
She sighed, eyes sliding shut.
"You can see the risk. Soul-to-soul magic is serious, deadly serious, because if anything goes wrong, all the souls fall into the spirit world, or the void, or wherever they happen to go. The magic is intricate, difficult and needs a steady hand. Even if there is more than one caster, the actual spell can only be wielded by one dragon."

"I can see the risk indeed..." Tatsu heaved a sigh even though his lungs did not truly exist. He contemplated a moment and then spoke with a cautious voice. "One dragon? Must they be physical?" Once the words left his mouth he knew Tiamat would realize what he wanted to do.

Purple eyes snapped up and brows drew down into a frown. Tiamat's voice went from fluid to clipped in a matter of breaths.
"Tatsu, I hope you aren't planning what I think you're planning. Because the risk is greater for spirits. Yes, they can perform the spell, but their souls are more detached, and in some cases fractured. The danger increases tenfold, if not more. If I have to, I will forbid it. I won't have you, or any of the others throwing yourselves into the thrice damned void."

Tatsu remained calm even as her voice rose to new emotions. He attempted to defuse the situation but failed so he just waited out her shouting. "Tiamat..." he said in a quite blank tone. "If you forbade me I would not listen. As close as we are... I would sacrifice my own existence for theirs. Unless there lies an alternate option I will attempt it with or without advice or assistance."

"Tatsu."
Her raised voice fell to something lower, more dangerous and despairing and yet pleading at the same time.
"In all the years I've been dealing with spirits, I've only seen past the spirit world and into the void a few times. Each time has left a scar on me - not one that any living being can see, but if you look close enough at my soul when I die, you'll be able to count each one as easily as you count the stars in the sky. I understand you want to save Rafael. I understand that you want to reunite them, but he may still recover on his own. And if he doesn't..."
At this point, she met his eyes dead on.
"I'll do my utmost to make sure I start that spell before you do. There's less risk for the living, and I'm probably going to the void when I die anyway, so it makes no difference to me. You're my friend, Tatsu, but I won't stand by and watch you do something like this when you know full well how risky it is. I'm sorry."

Tatsu said nothing for a moment, his face drawing into a grim expression. However, he spoke again soon. "...Fine then I will not commit myself to such a task but neither shall you. Do not let Esmeya find out about this. She will try herself."

Tiamat blew out a breath and relaxed back into the grass, remaining quiet for a few long moments.
"She won't be told. In the meantime, I'll try and search out an easier solution to this problem."
The silence fell again, but didn't last long.
"Thanks for listening to me, Tatsu. I'd really rather not have you consigned to the void, if it makes any difference."

(xD consigned to the void... god that phrase keeps stalking me now! ever since i finished Brisingr yesterday)
Tatsu offered a ghost of a smile, pardoning the pun if one could. "It makes a difference I suppose. I thank you for consideration... but whatever will be done will be done."

(Lol - I've got it, but haven't started it yet. Me + friend are having a contest in summer to see who finishes it first. xD)
She watched him carefully for a moment or so, before sighing and dropping her neck to lay in the grass.
"Really, I am sorry. I know you're probably angry at me for intruding and being insensitive to what Mica and Fenrill and Esmeya and Rafael are all going through, but I'm trying to do what I think is best. If there's a way, I'll find it. Promise."

(<3 Brisingr is awesome but sad. You'll see why. End of story xD NO SPOILERS)
"No...I'm not angry at you." His face softened. "I never could be mad at a friend." His dog-like face turned up into a grin and his whiskers twitching slightly with the shift in his emotion. "You know me well enough to figure that out."
